Written and narrated by Demian
I have no doubt there are mothers who totally fit the description of the Hallmark-worthy mother.
Mine was not one of them.
Maybe yours wasn’t either.
I won’t take anything away from the strength and depth of love my mother did have, but her mental and emotional wounds struck so deep, they often overshadowed her light, and at the worst times, wiped it out like nightfall.
My mother’s heart was broken, shattered at a very young age. And even more, her spirit.
This, understandably, deeply impacted all her children.
If you have a similar story, this day can be a painful reminder of what you never had or knew.
Be extra gentle with yourself today.
If you didn’t receive caring nurturance from your mother or mother figure, let yourself receive it in whatever amounts life may give it to you—simple kindness, breathtaking kindness. They are all powerful.
Most importantly, give this kind and caring regard to yourself.
No, it’s not the same as receieving it from your mother. There will always be a sense of loss, a touch of sadness and grieving, even anger. But when you let yourself feel what you feel, and let yourself be willing to receive, you may be surprised by how delightful serendipity can be.
Keep your beautiful heart open. Ready to receive at a moment’s notice.
On this Mother’s Day I have healed enough to where I can honor my mother in a genuine way that owns the good in my relationship with her as I heal from the bad.
On this day, I, also honor you, how nurturing and loving you can be, to your dreams, to those you love, to strangers ith whom you recognize a kindship in your humanity, to yourself. Know that you deserve this.
And if you can’t think of a single good thing your mother has done, I can. She gave birth to you. And for that, I am truly grateful.❤️
I have a poem I’d like to share with you.
I published it here on Silent No More, about a year and a half ago. A few days ago, I updated the introduction to that poem on it’s published page, and created an audio for that piece this past Friday night. The link is below.
I am really looking forward to sharing Snapshots of Memory and the Stories They Tell, a dialogue with my mother in poetry form with you.
Thank you for your witness.
From my heart to yours,
