Futility (Not Ours)
A poem, a response to efforts in America to wipe out the stories of marginalized people from schools, museums, institutions, history, and memory.
FUTILITY
We will lay out our stories in graphite, clay, and wood
We will defy your eraser with ballpoint and fountain
We will write on paper and across screens
If you hoard all the notebooks like money
and throttle the internet like people,
we will scribble on the back of envelopes and napkins
If you burn every piece of paper,
we will write in tattoo
Embedded ink will meet
embedded secrets in our DNA
And every story contained in strands
connecting us all
will be told
You cannot stop it
You will be betrayed by your own created vacuum
and judged by your own ancestors
